Bedding

There are lots of different types of bedding for small animals and it can somtimes be difficult to choose the right one for you. Here are some suitable beddings, most of which I have tried and tested.
EasiBed
EasiBed is a dust free, cost effective wood chip style bedding. It is one of my favourites to use with the guinea pigs as it's natural, soft and easy to clean, and this bedding is good for anyone who has any animal related allergies. A 20kg bag of this will usually cost £6-7.
Megazorb
Megazorb is extremly absorbent, very soft, cost effective and economical. I really like this bedding for so many reasons, but it did have some negatives it does tend to get everywhere and it made my allergies to the guinea pigs even worse! However if you don't have any allergies, I highly recommend it! A 85 ltr bag will cost around £9.
ComfyBed
ComfyBed is a mixture of shavings and EasyBed. I like to use this as an alternative to easybed every now and then, the shavings add to the absorbancy and the easy bed makes it look natural. This bedding is cost effective and looks nice in an outdoor enclosure. A 24kg bag will cost £6-7.
Fleece
I have personally found fleece to work best if your pets live indoors as it needs regular maintaining by poop scooping and washing / changing every 2-3 days. It can be expensive to buy at first but once you have 2-3 liners, you could easily save money in the long run by using the liners over and over. Fleece looks great in a cage as it's so colourful and it's fun to create cage themes! It also means you won't have any bedding sticking to soft cosy houses. I personally did find it much more smelly when compared with disposable bedding, but if you have regular access to a washing machine then you shouldn't have any issues.
Shavings
Shavings are very popular around the UK to use with small animals as it legally has to go through a cleaning process to ensure that it is dust free and safe for small animal use. I used shavings for years and really liked them, it is easy to maintain, can be purchased in most shops and is light and easy to dispose. Shavings aren't the most absorbent and poops are easily seen in the bedding.
Carefresh
Carefresh is a very absorbent, soft bedding. You can get a variety of colours making it fun for cage themes. This bedding is extremly expensive and if you prefer a more natural look, it may not be for you! I like to purchase this on special occasions for cage themes like at Christmas.
Finacard
Finacard is natural, soft and dust free. It is basically small pieces of cardboard, making it cheap and easy to dispose of. It looks natural and as it is brown, poops are less obvious making the cage appear cleaner and meaning that you don't have to spot clean as regularly. This bedding can be expensive and isn't as absorbent as some others, but is very suitable for small animals, especially gerbils!
Fitch
Fitch is a white paper based bedding, almost identical to Carefresh but much cheaper at around £15-17 for a 10kg bale. It works best for animals like hamsters and gerbils as it makes buying bedding cheap. Fitch works great for guinea pigs but as it is white, it shows the dirt almost immediately. Even if you spot clean every day, within 24 hours this bedding looks filthy. However, as it is soft and cost effective, it works great in a sleeping area of the cage during the colder months.
Back-to-Nature
BTN is a very natural, dust free and soft bedding. It works great for guinea pigs as it's absorbent and the colour hides the poop, making spot cleaning easier as it doesn't need to be done as regularly. This bedding is one of the most recommended for guinea pigs and rabbits, however it is very expensive at £6.5o for a 10ltr bag.
Shredded Paper
Shredded paper is a great and cheap alternative to bedding if you can't quite make it to the shops on cleaning day. It's easy to make and very inexpensive, however it isn't very absorbent and won't last as long as other types of bedding. It works great for litter trays and sleeping areas during the winter.
Aubiose
Although I do not have any personal experience with Aubiose, it is a very common bedding used with guinea pigs. It is described as being soft, dust free, natural and fresh. It has a similar consistency to easybed and comfybed and is fairly inexpensive to buy a large bale of it.
Medi-Bed
Medi-Bed is cut straw and works great for filling litter trays and sleeping areas. It isn't the most absorbent but looks natural and is very inexpensive. It is best used during the winter time, giving your pets a warmer bedding. It isn't the best bedding but isn't the worst either. A 25kg bale will cost you around £14.
Hay
Hay is an essential within a guinea pig and rabbits diet, and it is also very commonly used as a bedding more so during the winter. I would not recommend using hay alone, most people will put puppy pads or another type of bedding underneath, using hay as an insulator within an outdoor cage or hutch. Hay is easy to find in most shops but as your pets are eating it, if used as bedding it MUST be changed every day, making it overall more expensive than other types of bedding.
Straw
Straw is more commonly used to insulate outdoor cages and hutches during the winter. It is sold in most shops and is easy to find. However depending on the consistency, some straw may not be suitable as it would be too spikey and could cause hay pokes. I would very careful when choosing straw and wouldn't personally recommend it as a long term choice for bedding.
